April 2013

Print Email

The entire state was much below normal temperatures for the month of April with frigid temperatures shattering long standing minimum temperature records across the state. Potent arctic cold fronts passed across the state more than once bringing late season freezes and 40 degree temperature drops in 24 hours to many areas. Far west Texas, which is shielded by the mountains, was the only region not to see below normal temperatures. Precipitation, on the other hand, was not uniform in scope across the state. The coastal plains received well above normal precipitation, but the high plains were burdened once again with nearly zero rainfall. Much of the reason that the coastal plains did so well this month was due to a mid level disturbance on April 2nd that was fed by warm, moist southerly winds. This system produced over 2 inches of rain all the way from Houston to San Antonio, with several areas seeing over 4 inches of rain. The rest of the precipitation that fell during the month was due to cold front passages. The most significant front passed through on April 9th and 10th dropping temperatures in the Northern Panhandle from the 80's to the 20's overnight and leaving a light dusting of snow on the ground.
With rainfall variable across the state, the drought improved slightly in some places yet worsened in others. From the beginning to the end of the month all of west Texas returned to drought conditions with extreme drought conditions claiming hold of the area from Amarillo to San Angelo. From beginning to end Extreme drought moved from 29% of the state to 40% and Exceptional from 10% to 13%.
