December 2012

Texas was much warmer and drier than usual in December. Temperatures ranged from 2 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit above normal with the largest anomalies being centered along the Gulf Coast and then decreasing towards the north and west. Rainfall ranged from east to west with the Piney Woods region seeing roughly normal to slightly below normal precipitation, and the Trans-Pecos region seeing under 25% of the normal rainfall. The biggest weather makers this month occurred on the 10th, 20th, and 25th. On the 10th and 20th an arctic cold front pushed across the state dropping temperatures by as much as 20 degrees and driving thunderstorms across southeast Texas. The event on the 20th brought strong winds across the whole state causing widespread power outages and a dust storm to form in the Panhandle and travel all the way down to the Gulf Coast. On Christmas day a low pressure system passed over the state bringing with it heavy snow and strong storms. The Metroplex recorded it’s first white Christmas in several years with the Northern Suburbs seeing as much as 4 inches of snow; further south the cold front associated with the system spawned severe storms and three tornados causing minor damage.

The state remained in the grips of drought throughout the month with drought conditions occurring in 87% of the state, a jump from 80% at the beginning of the month. Roughly 12% of the state now lies in Exceptional drought with spots in the Upper Panhandle, along the coastal bend, and a new development centered 100 miles southwest of DFW. The Climate Prediction Center anticipates drought conditions over the next few months to continue across much of Texas with slight improvement in far East Texas.
