March 2013

Print Email

The month of March was another dry one, with many locations breaking records for the least amount of precipitation. The rain that did fall came due to strong cold front passages which kept temperatures below normal for the eastern half of the state. The most widespread rain event took place from March 9th -10th when upper level divergence and an arctic cold front passage brought rain to the majority of the state. This cold front brought thunderstorms upon its passage some of which were severe bringing damage to locations from Fort Worth to Austin. March 23rd and 24th saw yet another powerful cold front pass bringing rain and strong storms to North Texas.
The lack of rain across the state did nothing to ease water woes for everyone in drought conditions. The U.S. Drought Monitor posted that by the end of the month over 88% of the state was listed under some sort of drought condition; a jump from 75% at the beginning of the month. Exceptional drought conditions made a roaring comeback with an increase from 5 to 11% coverage of drought. The Rio Grande Valley and the Big Country saw the most spread of drought conditions with the return of D4 drought, while East Texas returned to abnormally dry conditions.
