May usually stands as the unofficial start of summer in Texas, but this year had other plans for us. Temperatures for the month were below normal for all of Texas except the panhandle due to unseasonably strong cold fronts pushing into Texas late in the season. Records for cold weather were set all over the state on the night of the morning of the 3rd with nearly all areas north of Interstate 10 seeing temperatures below 40 degrees. Rainfall for the month was hit and miss, with some areas seeing a deluge of precipitation, and others barely any at all. Several storm systems moved across the state during the month with supercell thunderstorms spawning a tornado outbreak on the 15th across North Texas, a strong low pressure system off the gulf coast bringing several inches of rain to southeast Texas on the 10th, and a slow moving low pressure system which caused record breaking flooding to occur in San Antonio on the 25th.
The U.S. Drought monitor followed the precipitation with its analysis of the drought across the state. Marked drought improvement was seen from beginning to the end of the month east of Interstate 35, where far East Texas left drought conditions altogether and drought severity dropped off from the hill country to the coastal plains. Anywhere north and west of the Balcones Escarpment did not far as well, with Exceptional drought expanding even further into new territory stretching from just to the north and east of the Permian Basin to Wichita Falls. For the whole state severe drought or worse fell from 74% to 60%, while Exceptional drought (the worst level of drought) rose to encompass 16% of the state.
