April 2002

Print Email

This month saw very little precipitation in the Brazos Valley with the monthly total ending up at 1.43", which is 1.77" below the normal. This puts the annual total at 6.23" below normal, though the area is considered to be just abnormally dry and not in drought. Temperatures were well above normal for most of April except during the first week or so. Three new high maximum temperatures were set, all taking place near the end of the month. Storms brought some severe weather to the Brazos Valley on the 7th, associated with a low pressure system in the eastern portions of New Mexico. Reports of gusty winds and hail were seen throughout the area, which contributed much of the precipitation for the month. The beginning of the month saw cold temperatures due to a frontal system, but no rain fell in the area. Toward the middle to end of the month, high pressure dominated over the area, causing extremely warm temperatures. A weak cold front passed through on the 25th, dropping temperatures to near normal, though only light precipitation fell.
