April 2011

Print Email

April 2011 will go down in College Station history as the warmest and driest April of all time! Twenty-one temperature-related records were broken this month including highest maximum and minimum temperature records. The highest maximum temperature, occurred on the 19th with a high of 96°F, breaking the old record of 92°F set back in 1987. The highest minimum temperature, occurred on the 20th with a low of 76°F, breaking the old record of 72°F set back in 1984. An interesting thing to note is that almost every single daily mean temperature was above normal this month. The most extreme case was seen on 8th when the daily mean temperature was 17°F above normal. April 2011 was the driest April ever in College Station. There was only trace of rain recorded bringing the yearly total to 4.29", 7.45" below normal. The below average rainfall further worsened drought and wild fire conditions across the Brazos Valley and the state of Texas. By mid month 591 square miles of the Brazos Valley had been burned and by month’s end the US Drought Monitor still had the Brazos Valley designated as being in an exceptional drought (D4), the worst in Texas. An outdoor burn ban was still in place over the Brazos Valley during April and will continue to stay in place for at least the next 90s days. According to the Climate Prediction Center, the next month will bring no relief to the warm and dry trend that has been plaguing the area the past several months and drought conditions are expected to persist throughout the summer.
