February 2004

Very wet weather hit the Brazos Valley for the month of February, 2004 as 5.91" of rain that fell was 3.53" above normal. Cold fronts passing through during the first week dropped nearly an inch of rain over the area, and maximum temperatures fell from the 60s to lower 50s. The lowest temperature of the month, 29°F, was recorded on the 7th. After a few days of much drier weather, an arctic air mass behind a cold front dropped temperatures into below-freezing levels while College Station received 4.13" of rain on the 9th-14th including over an inch on both the 9th and the 11th. The arctic air mass almost caused many old records to be broken – three new records were set between the 13th and 15th, two for lowest maximum temperature and one for lowest minimum temperature. On February 14th, a trace of snow was reported at Easterwood Airport, as well as Bryan, where it actually stayed on the ground for some time. The following week, temperatures soared back up to the upper 60s and made it all the way up to 75, the maximum for the month of February. Another front came through on the 23rd bringing another 0.58" to the already soaked area. Temperatures remained around the normal for the rest of the month before one more cold front came through on the 29th bringing another 0.29" of precipitation to College Station. To date, the area has received 10.45" of rain, nearly double the normal amount for this time of year.
