March 2007

Print Email

In contrast to dry February, this March produced a large surplus in rainfall. The monthly precipitation total was 6.73", 3.89" more than normal. That brings the yearly total rainfall to 11.79", 3.25" above normal. Therefore, despite the fact that February 2007 was the second driest February ever reported, the Brazos Valley can report above average year-to-date rainfall totals, mainly due to the large amounts of rain during March. A cold front brought light precipitation totals on the 1st of the month. Most of the month's rainfall came on during the three day span between the 12th and 14th. A slow moving upper-level trough moved over the area. Its northeast movement produced a training effect of rainfall over the area and resulted in rainfall totals over an inch for each day (12th, 13th, 14th) and a three-day total of 4.17". Another upper-level system moved through on the 26th. It produced very heavy rains and a precipitation total of 2.30" on the 26th. Temperatures for the month were above average, with a mean monthly temperature of 65.3°F degrees, which was 3.7°F above normal and the mean minimum temperature of 55.5°F was 5.0°F above average. The warmer than average minimum temperature was due to the moist air mass that was over the area for most of the month, which also allowed for a great deal of the precipitation.
