May 2010

Print Email

Summer came early to College Station in May 2010 as sweltering temperatures made the cold weather of this past winter feel like a distant memory. The average monthly temperature of 79.4°F made this past May the second warmest since records started in 1889, second only to May 1996. In a typical May, maximum temperatures will reach the 90°F mark 6 times, but May 2010 saw 21 days reach the 90°F mark, tying a record set in 1996. Four temperature records were set or tied; three maximums in an eight day period from the 3rd-11th and a minimum on the 22nd. Otherwise, 16 maximum or minimum temperatures were near records throughout the month. In addition to the warmth that characterized the month, very little rain precipitation was recorded at Easterwood Field. 1.88" of the precipitation recorded at Easterwood Field in May fell in the 24-hour period of the 14th-15th, which happened to coincide with commencement ceremonies at Texas A&M. Monthly precipitation in May 2010 was a little less than 40% of normal, at exactly 2.00", increasing the 2010 year-to-date deficit to 5.35".
