What began as a wet month turned into an extension of summer for the Brazos Valley. A frontal system passed over the state during the first week, dropping 2.06" of rain through the first seven days. Temperatures hovered around their normal levels until a cold front cooled things down on the 9th. The weather was much drier during the second week of October, when the third cold front of the month came through the area. Temperatures cooled dramatically, and 0.42" of rain fell in 24 hours. Following the passage of the front, a high pressure system formed over the state and temperatures soared as a result. There was only one day during the final two weeks of October in which the average daily temperature was less than 10°F above normal, and the maximum temperature reached 90°F for six consecutive days during the third week of the month. Between the 17th and 31st, at least one new or near temperature record was set every day. This included a five-day stretch (18th-22nd) during which new records were set for both highest maximum and highest minimum temperatures. A cold front briefly cooled things down on the 23rd, but the month ended with seven days of near 90°F temperatures. The average daily temperature of 77.0°F makes this the warmest October in College Station history. While it did get down to 51°F on the 15th, the average daily minimum temperature was over 9°F above normal for October. Despite 12 days with measurable precipitation, College Station was 0.41" below normal and never received more than 0.87" in a day. For the year, College Station is 12.63" above normal and only needs 3.46" over the final two months to have one of its ten wettest years on record.
