College Station Monthly Summary: August 2001

During August, the Brazos Valley experienced above-average temperatures for the fifth straight month with a monthly mean temperature of 86.2°F. The maximum temperature reached or exceeded the 100°F mark 19 times during the month, with 27 days having a maximum of 90°F or higher. Precipitation was abundant, however, as 3.53" fell at Easterwood Field, the majority of which fell on the last 6 days of the month. August began with hot and dry conditions as a high pressure system dominated the weather patterns. Only 0.08" of rain was recorded during the first 25 days of the month, with 19 days at 100°F or higher. However, on the 26th, a low pressure trough moved into the area, allowing precipitation to develop. We weather continued through the end of the month as moist, sub-tropical air from Mexico was pumped into the region. A total of 3.45" of rain fell on the last 6 days of the month, and temperatures dropped into the 80s.
