College Station Monthly Summary: December 2012

Compared to the previous few months, College Station was wet this December with a surplus of 0.50 inches recorded at Easterwood Field. The majority of this precipitation fell on the 9th and 15th of December, for on both dates powerful cold fronts passed over the city, forcing up strong thunderstorms, bringing heavy rainfall, and dropping temperatures as much as 25 degrees Fahrenheit. If it were not for these cold fronts passing over the state the month may have felt more like October than December, for temperatures easily got into the upper 70s and low 80s, breaking records for heat.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, Brazos County saw slight improvement in drought conditions from the beginning to the end of the month moving from Severe to Moderate drought status, ending the year with a 3.32 inch surplus of rainfall. The Climate Prediction Center anticipates the drought to continue across the Brazos Valley, yet with slight improvements in the coming few months.
