College Station Monthly Summary: February 2011

The weather in College Station was anything but normal during the month of February. At the start of the month schools in the area closed for a snow day, but by months end, shorts and flip-flops were making an appearance. On the first day of February, a cold front moved through the area and winds peaked at 56 mph, damaging roofs and knocking down fences in College Station. The high temperature for the month was 82°F on the 27th and the low temperature was 19°F on the 2nd, showing the wide range of temperatures seen during the month. On the 2nd and 3rd the daily high temperature barely reached the freezing mark. The 32°F temperature on the 3rd set a new lowest maximum temperature for that day, breaking the old record of 33°F set back in 1955. Although schools closed on the 4th for a snow day, little precipitation was seen during the month of February. The monthly total of 0.61" was more than an inch and a half below normal. The lack of precipitation worsened drought conditions in the Brazos Valley this month. The US Drought Monitor still had Brazos Valley placed in the extreme drought category and Brazos Country officials continued to keep the burn ban in place for the area. By the end of the month temperatures were above normal and a new highest minimum temperature record was set on the 27th at 67°F.
