College Station Monthly Summary: February 2012

February 2012 was warmer than normal, but it packed a punch right out of the gate. In the first few days of February, a massive storm system tracked slowly across the state, dumping rain across much of Texas. The series of storms accompanied a deep low pressure system that tracked across North Texas, and a heavy plume of moisture had filtered in from the Gulf of Mexico. The conditions were right for a heavy rain event. The cold front passed through College Station on the 3rd and it brought a dangerous surprise along. A weak tornado was spotted in Snook and the wall cloud was believed to have traveled through south College Station that same evening. Very little damage resulted from the tornado, but high winds and flash flooding managed to cause some destruction across the entire city. Overall, the month of February received a copious amount of rainfall (9.03"), and February 2012 claimed a new high record of 6.26" of rain in 24 hours.
