College Station Monthly Summary: January 2007

If you enjoy cold and wet weather then you should have enjoyed this January. During the month, the Brazos Valley felt the full effects of an El Nino year. The average monthly temperature was 47.1°F, 3.1°F below normal. For three consecutive days (15th, 16th, 17th) record low high temperatures were reported with values of 37°F, 31°F, and 33°F, respectively. During two of those days, the 16th and 17th, the difference in the high and low temperature was only 3°F and the average temperature was 19°F below normal. Not only was this January colder than normal, but the precipitation values were also above average. For the month, 4.98" of precipitation was reported, 1.66" above normal. A record daily maximum rainfall total was set on the 13th with a rainfall total of 1.20". This wet weather combined with the cold temperature brought icy conditions to the Brazos Valley on the 15th, 16th, and 17th. This winter weather shut down the Brazos Valley for two days as temperature remained near freezing, allowing the ice to stick around. This area, and most of the state, benefitted greatly from this abundance of rainfall in a normally dry month of the year. As a result, the Brazos Valley is no longer listed under drought conditions by the U.S. Drought Monitor.
