College Station Monthly Summary: January 2011

Much needed rain finally made its way to the Brazos Valley but it was still not enough to lift the area out of the current drought. According to the US Drought Monitor, College Station is still classified as having extreme drought conditions. Nearly three inches of precipitation fell over the Brazos Valley during the month, about a third of an inch below normal. The area saw eight precipitation days during the month, with the 24-hour maximum falling on the 9th, when 1.69" of precipitation were recorded. The lack of moisture and cold weather continued to raise the threat of wildfires across the county. While the mean maximum temperature for the month was exactly normal at 60.6°F, the mean monthly average and minimum temperatures were below normal. The maximum temperature reached during the month of January was 79°F on the 30th, while the minimum temperature bottomed out at 24°F on both the 12th and 24th. The month of January did not set any new records but plenty of near records were set. Most notably was the near record set on the 30th tied the second highest maximum temperature for the month set back in 1971. As the month ended a squall line and arctic blast swept through the Brazos Valley, causing damage to homes and businesses and cooling off the area considerably.
