College Station Monthly Summary: January 2014

It was a cold January here in College Station, for temperatures were consistently below average for much of the month as strong cold fronts slammed into the Brazos Valley. The coldest day this month occurred on the night of January 6th after a powerful arctic cold front pushed through the area. Though not quite a record, this did bring a low of 19 degrees to Easterwood Field. The month was quite dry as well with most of the cold fronts that pushed though being barren of moisture. Once notable example was on the 23rd when warm gulf winds pushed up and over a strong cold front to bring first a cold rain and then sleet to College Station with light accumulations. The majority of the precipitation this month did fall as liquid and most of it on the 9th when a low pressure center towards Dallas brought in moisture from the gulf and a steady rain to the Brazos Valley. Not all of the month was cold though. On January 20th southerly winds and mostly clear skies allowed temperatures to flirt with 80!

The month was much drier than normal, with only 40% of normal precipitation falling. This low precipitation combined with the low values from December allowed for the drought monitor to place Brazos County under abnormally dry conditions, the first phase before official drought begins.
