College Station Monthly Summary: July 1997

July began slightly cooler than normal and ended warmer than normal in the Brazos Valley, with conditions that varied little from day-to-day. The maximum change in the average daily temperature from one day to the next was only 2°F through the 30th, as the temperatures continued a slight but steady increase from the first through the end of the month. Although we reached 99°F three times this month, we have yet to observe a temperature of 100°F or greater this year in College Station. The lack of rainfall throughout nearly the entire month reminded many of the severe drought which occurred last year. After 33 days, (June 27th - July 29th) since the last significant rainfall, residents finally received some relief from dry conditions as an intense thunderstorm on the 30th produced varied amounts of rain across our region. Less than an inch was reported at Easterwood Field though other locations around the Brazos Valley reported close to three inches of precipitation. Strong gusts near 50 mph produced by the storm caused structural damage to homes and businesses along with scattered power outages. Some street flooding resulted from the heavy rains, which initiated numerous minor traffic accidents.
