College Station Monthly Summary: June 2013

Dry and hot was the month of June 2013 in College Station. Only three days this month saw recordable precipitation placing the city 3.20" below normal precipitation for the month. Over 80% of the rain for the month came on the 2nd, when a slow moving front and moderate lifting produced thunderstorms across the Brazos Valley dropping 1.04" of rain on the city. The rest of the month mostly saw partly cloudy skies filled with fair weather cumulus clouds and plenty of heat. The whole month was an average of two degrees above normal and set its fair share of heat records towards the end of the month when a ridge of high pressure allowed for a heat wave to settle in on the area and an all time high of 106 was set on the 29th. With the lack of rainfall and ample heat, the drought began to strengthen across the Brazos Valley. Although Brazos County itself is still listed under moderate drought, all areas to the north, west, and south of the county were upgraded to an extreme drought, and if conditions do not improve then Brazos County will quickly be added to that category.
