College Station Monthly Summary: May 2004

The month of May was warm and wet for the Brazos Valley. The month began with some showers and cold temperatures due to a cold front moving out of the area. On the 2nd, a 28 year-old record for lowest minimum temperature was tied at 48°F. A high pressure system moved across the state warming up the area. Beginning on the 8th, College Station had seven consecutive days with measurable precipitation, and ten days with at least a trace of rainfall. The heaviest rain fell on the 13th due to a slow-moving cold frontal boundary with 5.04" recorded at Easterwood Field. In the nearby city of Hearne in Robertson County, 17.50" fell in 9 hours and two dams broke, flooding large parts of Robertson and Brazos Counties. After the passage of the cold front, temperatures warmed up with highs above 86°F for the entire second half of the month. Only a trace of rain was recorded after the 17th, and the area hit 90°F for the first time on the 24th. The minimum temperatures were also very high with records tied on the 18th and 29th and broken on the 30th. May ended by reaching its highest temperature at 96°F. The average temperature was only a degree above normal, but 7.81" of rain were recorded, which is 2.76" above normal. This added to the already-high precipitation total for 2004, which is now over 8" above normal at 25.24".
