College Station Monthly Summary: October 1998

Once again both temperatures and precipitation were above normal during the month of October for the residents of the Brazos Valley. The first week of October began with warmer than normal temperatures setting two highest minimum temperature records on the 4th and the 5th, with the low temperatures only reaching 77°F on both days. With the passage of a cold front on the 6th, temperatures dropped to below normal values for the following 6 days. A similar situation occurred on the 19th when a cold front passed and kept the daily mean temperatures below normal through the 24th of October. The bulk of the precipitation during October occurred from the 17th to the 21st. A wave over the Western United States with the help of two tropical systems (Madeline and Lester) in the Eastern Pacific sent a great deal of moisture over Texas. With an area of upper level divergence situated over South Central Texas, extreme amounts of rain fell on the Brazos, including 6.18" at Easterwood Field on the 17th and 18th, combined. The total monthly precipitation was 5.03" above normal, bringing the total yearly precipitation to 0.83" normal, the first time in 1998 with an annual surplus.
