College Station Monthly Summary: October 2001

The Brazos Valley experienced fairly mild temperatures but below average precipitation during October. The mean monthly temperature of 68.0°F was 1.4°F below the normal, while the monthly precipitation total of 3.53" was 0.28" below normal. October was also a month of extremes. Bryan/College Station set or tied both a lowest minimum (42°F) and a highest maximum (93°F). October began with mild, sunny weather with high temperatures in the middle 80s as a high pressure system dominated the weather patterns. However, a cold front originating in Canada moved through the area on the 5th, triggering heavy precipitation in some areas. Easterwood Field recorded its 24-hour maximum of 1.99" when this system moved through. This front was fairly strong, as it dropped the maximum temperature on the 6th to 70°F, which tied the record for lowest maximum on this date. High temperatures quickly rebounded into the 80s until a weak cold front moved in on the 11th. This front triggered precipitation through the 13th, the last day with measurable rain during October. With the exception of anomalously warm temperatures from the 22nd to the 24th, the Brazos Valley experienced beautiful fall weather for the remainder of the month.
