College Station Monthly Summary: October 2002

The month of October 2002 will be remembered for the ample amount of precipitation received in the College Station area. The monthly total recorded at the Easterwood Airport was 9.79", 5.57" above normal and further reducing the year-to-date rainfall deficit to only 3.98". The cause of heavy rainfall totals this month can be attributed to the stalling of many frontal boundaries across Central and Southern Texas. Also, the sub-tropical jet stream has been draped across the southern half of Texas as well, allowing for low pressure disturbances to make their way across Texas. During the month of October, temperatures on average were slightly below normal, as 19 days remained cooler. As a result of rain-cooled temperatures, a record low maximum occurred on the 14th of 60°F, 7°F below the previous record of 67°F set in 1969.
