College Station Monthly Summary: September 1997

September began with a thunderstorm passing through the Brazos Valley on the 3rd, which provided the area with the first amount of measurable precipitation (0.19" at Easterwood Field) since the 8th of August. Strong winds and pea-sized hail were associated with this storm and slight damage to trees could be seen in some areas of College Station. Overall, our region experienced much warmer than normal temperatures throughout most of the month of September. Average daily temperatures were 4°F above normal or greater between the 13th and the 21st. The greatest daily temperature departure during this period and for the month was +8°F on the 17th. A cold front, combined with overrunning warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico, produced one of the most significant rain events we have seen this year. Nearly 3.50" of precipitation was observed at Easterwood Field over a 36-hour period on the 22nd and 23rd.
