College Station Monthly Summary: September 2005

It was a hot, dry, and record breaking month in the Brazos Valley. In all, seven days either tied or set a new highest maximum temperature, the highest at 105 on the 26th. With all the record highs, this September became the hottest September on record with an average temperature of 85.2°F, breaking the old record of 84.5°F set in 1911. Not only was it extremely hot but it was also very dry. Only a trace of rainfall was recorded making this the driest September on record, breaking the previous record of 0.02" set in 1929. Easterwood Field in now 6.71" below normal in terms of year-to-date precipitation. Anticipation hit the Brazos Valley when Rita, the third strongest hurricane (in terms of pressure) ever recorded, set its sights for the Texas Coast. Fortunately for all in the area, the hurricane made an easterly turn providing only high winds for the area. Unfortunately it left the area dry as only a trace of rainfall was recorded on the 24th. The only relief came in the form of a weak front on the 29th which lowered the high temperature from 103°F the day before to 84°F. When all was said and done for the month a total of nine records were tied or broken, 13 near records were tied or broken, a major hurricane caused large-scale evacuations and problems, and the hottest and driest September on record was recorded.
