College Station Monthly Summary: August 2006

This August proved to be just about average as the average monthly temperature was slightly warmer than normal at 86.0°F, 1.3°F above average. The monthly precipitation was 2.47", 0.16" below normal. The bulk of the precipitation came on the 6th and 7th when the area received 1.88". A strong area of high pressure kept us hot and dry for the next 10 days. The average high for the 8th-18th was 97°F. As this high began to weaken, the chance for afternoon showers again increased. A storm moved through the area on the 22nd and produced 0.59" of rainfall. Temperature remained warm throughout the month with an average high temperature of 96.6°F, 0.4°F above normal, and only one day of the month reported a high temperature below 90°F. High humidity levels kept the temperatures warmer at night than normal. The monthly mean minimum temperature for the month was 75.5°F, which was 2.3°F above normal and almost all of the records and near records for the month were related to the minimum temperature. Overall, August 2006 was an average monthly as precipitation was slightly below average and temperatures were slightly above average, though neither proved to be very far from the average values. The yearly precipitation total is now at 27.80", 2.67" above normal.
