Texas Climate Report: June 1997

The first week of June brought cooler than normal temperatures to nearly every portion of the state, except for extreme West Texas. It was during this week that average daily temperatures were about 3°F below normal statewide. El Paso was the only exception, where daily temperatures averaged nearly 4°F above normal. This temperature pattern was very similar to that observed in May across Texas. Very little rainfall was observed this first week as well -- regions in the southeastern portion of the state (Victoria, Corpus Christi, Austin) were the only places to observe above normal precipitation from the 1st through the 7th. Corpus Christi received the most rain during this period, observing 1.58" on the 7th.

Daily temperature departures of -6°F were characteristic of the second week in June throughout the Panhandle, while departures from normal in other parts of the state were not nearly as extreme. Some regions made up for the dry first week by receiving well above normal precipitation the following week. The 8th (Abilene, 1.59"; Lubbock, 1.29"; Midland, 1.72"), 9th (Austin, 2.92"; Texarkana, 1.73"; Waco, 0.99") and 10th (Austin, 0.66"; Waco, 1.79") provided significant rainfall events for regions statewide, especially in Central Texas.

Towards the end of the third week and into the fourth, Central Texas was once again overcome by devastating weather. This time, heavy rains and flooding brought destruction and heartache to communities in this region. Three people in Bandera County and one person in Brown County lost their lives as rising river and lake levels from intense rainfall covered portions of the Hill Country. Many counties have been affected by the floods this month, but perhaps one of the worst cases was west of San Antonio. Eighteen to twenty inches of rain fell in Bandera, Kerr and Kendall Counties over the weekend of the 21st. In D'Hanis, 10.50" fell on the 22nd while other towns in South Central Texas observed 5 to 6 inches of rain on both the 21st and 22nd.

As temperatures began to rise and the skies began to clear during the end of June over most of Texas, the flood waters finally began to recede. Preliminary estimates of 350 to 400 homes were damaged by the floods and nearly 200 of them were on Lake Travis, which was hit hard because it is the primary downstream repository for the Colorado River Basin. A total of 20 counties were affected and are now preparing for the cleanup efforts which lie ahead.
