Texas Climate Report: June 2005

Sprinkler systems were used in abundance across the state of Texas throughout the month of June as Mother Nature provided very little rainfall. This is in stark contrast to June of last year which saw several stations record over 10 inches of rain, causing widespread flooding. The past month was also characterized by above normal temperatures throughout the entire state, though average temperature weren’t too far from normal readings.

An upper-level disturbance on the first day of the month brought the bulk of the June precipitation for many stations, especially across central and eastern Texas. For most stations, this was the first and only significant precipitation seen in June. Victoria received 1.01" of rain and Waco 1.14". Most of the precipitation was concentrated in the High Plains and Low Rolling Plains regions, and precipitation in these regions was also below normal for the month. Only a trace of rainfall was recorded in El Paso, with Brownsville, Del Rio, Galveston, and Houston receiving less than 10% of normal precipitation.

Severe weather struck Texas on June 5, an active day across the West Texas plains with 14 reports of tornadoes and 44 hail reports, including 4.25" diameter hail in Lynn County. June 9 saw 55 reports of hail and ten tornado reports, including a multiple vortex tornado reportedly a quarter to half mile wide in Floyd County. There were ten more reports of tornadoes the following day, with all the storms concentrated in a small area near Amarillo. The latter half of the month brought little severe weather to the Lone Star state as the ingredients for severe weather shifted further northward, a rather common occurrence for the month of June.

The lack of rainfall normally found across the eastern half of Texas is revealed in the Long Term Palmer Drought Severity Index. According to this index, the North Central, East, and Upper Coast regions are in the midst of a moderate drought while the Lower Valley region is in the grips of a severe drought.
