Texas Climate Report: August 2006

August 2006 provided some relief to a few areas suffering from high temperatures and little rainfall but most of the state saw the drought persist through its 17th month. Western areas in the Edwards Plateau and the entire Trans Pecos region reported rainfall at least twice the normal total. El Paso reported a record setting 6.85" during the month, almost four times the normal August total of 1.75". El Paso received 72% of its normal yearly total of 9.43" this month. A combined precipitation total from July and August is 10.02", 0.59" over the normal yearly total. Needless to say, it has been very wet in the El Paso area and continues to be so, as the first five days of September have produced an additional 3.74". Midland, San Angelo, Galveston, and Amarillo also reported above average precipitation for the month.

However, those areas that received rainfall were the exception and not the norm. In Central Texas, the drought conditions continue to worsen. Areas along the I-35 corridor saw little rain during the month. The Dallas/Fort Worth area received 26% of its normal rainfall, Waco received 3%, Austin received 9%, and San Antonio received only 1% of its normal rainfall. San Antonio reported only 0.03" during the month, compared to its normal August total of 2.57". Corpus Christi and Victoria received only 17% and 11%, respectively, of their normal monthly precipitation totals. Other areas along the coast fared much better with Brownsville receiving 97% of their monthly total. Port Arthur, Houston, and College Station all reported monthly rainfall totals of at least 89% of normal. The North Central and South Central regions reported the lowest monthly rainfall percentages, with the Low Rolling Plans also reporting low precipitation totals.

Temperatures were above average for most of the state with the exception of El Paso and Amarillo. The largest departure from normal was reported in Wichita Falls, which was 5.7°F above the normal monthly mean temperature. The average high for the entire month in Wichita Falls was 101.8°F, with a maximum high temperature for the month of 109°F on the 24th. The DFW area was also much warmer than normal reported a monthly mean temperature of 89.9°F, which is 5.4°F above normal. The area along the I-35 corridor, which received very low precipitation totals, also reported the highest departures from the normal temperatures. San Antonio, Austin, Waco, and DFW all reported mean temperatures at least 3.6°F above normal.

With the lack of rainfall and high temperatures the drought conditions saw no improvement during August 2006. As of August 29, the United States Drought Monitor has most of the state under extreme drought conditions with some areas, including the Dallas/Fort Worth and Wichita Falls areas listed under exceptional conditions. The Panhandle has seen some improvement and is mainly listed as under moderate drought conditions. Only the El Paso area and the Upper Coast Region are not listed under any drought conditions.
