Texas Climate Report: June 2006

June 2006 provided very different weather for different areas of the state. Along the Gulf Coast heavy rains led to flooding, the remainder of the state remained very dry, worsening already terrible drought conditions. Generally, precipitation was above average along the coast but as you move to the north and west precipitation amount decreased dramatically.

Dallas/Fort Worth received only 0.34" for the entire month, 11% of normal. Also, San Angelo received only 0.30", 12% of normal, 0.20" of which came on the 17th. Not all coastal stations reported above average rainfall, in fact, Brownsville reported only 0.24", the lowest precipitation total statewide, which is only 8% of normal! The station reported only 2 days with precipitation over 0.01", which is 4 days below the normal of 6 days. The United States Drought Monitor has placed most of South Texas under exceptional drought conditions, the most severe category it issues.

On the other hand, most of the coastal regions have received too much rainfall. Corpus Christi reported 8.62" on the 1st. Combined with the measured precipitation of 3.06" on May 31st and 0.67" on June 2nd, the three day total for May 31st – June 2nd was a staggering 12.35"! The station also received 1.79" on the 26th and reported total monthly precipitation of 11.19”, 3 times above the normal June total. An upper level system brought the state most of its rainfall on the 16th, 17th, and 18th. For Central Texas, totals for the 17th and 18th included 2.15" in Austin, 1.53" in San Antonio, and 1.68" in Waco. As the system moved southeast, the entire Houston area was affected. Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) reported 4.23" on the 18th and 19th, and Houston Hobby reported 9.29" on the 19th. Three day totals for 17th, 18th, and 19th were 7.04" at IAH, 11.18" at Hobby airport, and over 13 inches in some location in south Houston. The Beaumont/Port Arthur area also reported a total 4.19" from the 18th and 19th.

In terms of temperature, most of the state was above average. A small circular area, including Austin and Victoria, reported below average temperatures. Houston and Port Arthur both finished the month with exactly normal mean temperatures. The remaining stations reported above average temperatures. Lubbock reported the greatest departure from normal at 3.3°F above average. Wichita Falls, San Angelo, and Del Rio were all at least 3.0°F above average. The entire stated averaged out to 1.3°F above normal.
