Texas Climate Report: October 2006

October 2006 was a very wet month for the Eastern half of the state. All of the stations on or east of I-35 received above normal precipitation, with the exception of San Antonio. The Upper Coast region received the most rainfall in the state. College Station reported 12.88" (305% of normal), Galveston reported 11.62" (333% of normal), Houston reported 14.53" (323% of normal), and Port Arthur reported 14.72" (315% of normal). The largest amount of this rainfall came on the 15th and 16th. During the 15th and 16th, Houston International Airport reported 7.57", Galveston reported 6.07", College Station reported 5.36", and Port Arthur reported 7.73". All of these precipitation totals were more than the normal average for the entire month! In fact, most of the state, with the exception of the panhandle, received copious rainfall on these two days. DFW reported 2.78" and Wichita Falls reported 4.74". The spatially averaged total rainfall for the month was 3.98", which is 1.30" above normal. The spatially averaged total rainfall statewide since January 2006 is 22.02", which is 2.19" below normal. However, thanks to some heavy rainfall, this number has improved from 4.00" below normal in July.

Temperatures during this month were just about average. The state-wide average temperature was 67.3°F, which is 1.0°F above normal. Despite the rainfall, East Texas had slightly warmer than average temperatures while a West Texas had slightly cooler than normal temperatures. Five stations reported temperatures below average. The greatest negative departure from normal was in El Paso, which reported an average mean temperature of 64.5°F, which is 0.5°F below average. South Central Texas and the Gulf Coast all reported temperatures at least 1.0°F above average. Del Rio, Corpus Christi, Galveston, and Houston all reported temperatures at least 2.0°F above average. Brownsville, San Antonio, and Port Arthur were at least 1.6°F above normal. College Station reported a mean temperature that was exactly normal. The highest maximum temperature reported during the month was 96°F, in Waco on the 1st and 2nd and Wichita Falls on the 2nd. The lowest minimum temperature reported during the month was 27°F in Amarillo on the 31st.

Some severe weather affected portions of the state on the 10th, 15th, and 18th. For the month there was a total of 18 severe wind reports, 10 hail reports, and 7 tornado reports.
