Texas Climate Report: September 2008

September 2008 brought a few interesting weather features. The beginning of September saw fairly warm temperatures, perhaps a degree or two above average for many areas of Texas. With the landfall of Gustav in Louisiana, all eyes turned to Hurricane Ike churning in the Gulf. The eye made landfall early morning in Galveston on the 13th and brought near catastrophic destruction to much of Galveston and many surrounding coastal cities, including Surfside Beach which was hit hard by surge from Ike. (For this reason, Galveston’s data record ceases on the 12th).

Statewide temperatures dropped as a cold front pushed through the state during the middle of the month, after Ike had dissipated. The rest of the month brought normal to below normal mean temperatures to most of the state, and a late month front brought some cooler overnight temperatures than normal. So, despite a warmer first half of the month (as seen by Galveston’s departure from its mean), temperatures around the state were about 1°F-3°F below average. Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin exhibit the only departures about 1°F above average, though this difference is still not extremely abnormal.

One beneficial aspect of Ike was its moderate precipitation. Though most inland areas did not experience torrential rains, many Far East Texas and Western Louisiana cities did receive a few inches to help ease the strain of a dry summer. However, elsewhere around the state, precipitation was highly variable: Lubbock received more than triple its usual rainfall for September, while cities in South Central Texas, including San Antonio and Victoria, received less than half their usual rainfall. Austin recorded 0.02" of precipitation for the month, which is one of their driest Septembers on record. Many areas of Texas later in the month experienced cloud-free skies and very little, if any, precipitation.
