Texas Climate Report: February 2010

February 2010 was a month of record breaking events for the state of Texas, and National Weather Service meteorologists believe this winter has been the coldest winter Texas has seen in 25 years. February will go down in the record books not only as one of the coldest Februarys, but also for the heavy snowfall in North Texas. A snowstorm on the 11th-12th brought 12.5" of snow to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in a 24-hour period, breaking the old record of 12.1" in January of 1964. This included 11.2" on the 11th, which shattered the previous record of 7.8" for a single calendar day. This snow event lasted just 24 hours and brought the snow total for the Dallas/Fort Worth area up to 15 inches for the year, two inches shy of the all time record of 17.5" set back in 1977-1978. Luckily, the NBA All-Star game and festivities scheduled for the weekend went on with little trouble in the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, despite all the snow on the ground.

In addition to the record-setting snowfall in North Texas, monthly temperatures were much colder than normal, and this was the case across the entire state. At every single first-order station, the mean, maximum, and minimum temperatures for the month were below normal, with only one exception. The monthly average low in El Paso was 0.7°F above normal at a balmy 38°F! Austin had the most significant departure, averaging 8.7°F below the normal mean temperature for February. Austin, also set a record low of 23°F on the 25th, breaking the old record of 24°F set back in 1960. The largest departure for average maximum temperature was in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, thanks in large part to the major winter storm and other storms that pushed across the area. Galveston and Port Arthur had the lowest average minimum temperatures compared to normal, a sign that the cold air was even reaching the normally mild Upper Texas coast.

Every single station had at least five days or more of rain this month. Port Arthur had the most rainfall this month with 5.57", including 2.01" of rainfall in a 24-hour period on the 3rd-4th. Corpus Christi broke a daily maximum rainfall record on the 12th with a total rainfall amount of 1.45". The last week of the month brought a rare accumulating snowfall even to Central Texas on the 23rd. The snowfall totals were 3.0" in College Station and 3.1" in Waco, in addition to reports of 4.0" of snow in Bell County.
