Texas Climate Report: September 2010

September 2010 was filled with many weather elements. From heat to tropical storms, Texas saw it all this past month. According to the National Weather Service this past summer (June through August) was the fourth warmest summer in United States history. Yet, the summer heat extended itself through the beginning of September across much of Texas. Temperatures across most of the state remained high until a cold front passed through the state right around the time autumnal equinox made its appearance. Seven of the nineteen first-order stations saw an absolute maximum temperature of 100°F or more and every single station recorded a positive average minimum temperature departure for the month of September. All nineteen stations received at least four days of precipitation with Corpus Christi receiving the most totaling 15.86" of rainfall. The Austin, Dallas/ Fort Worth, and Waco areas broke new monthly records for maximum precipitation totals in 24 hours. Austin had 7.39", Dallas/Fort Worth had 5.75", and Waco 5.89" of rainfall within 24 hours.

The Lone Star State also felt the indirect and direct effects of a hurricane and a tropical storm. Most notably was Tropical Storm Hermine. Hermine wreaked havoc from Corpus Christi all the way to the Dallas/ Fort Worth area. With help from Tropical Storm Hermine and Hurricane Karl some impressive rain totals for the month were seen in Austin, Brownsville, Corpus Christi, the Metroplex, San Antonio, Victoria and Waco. Tropical Storm Hermine also brought tornadoes to the Dallas area. 115 mph winds were clocked as a tornado skittered through an industrial area in Dallas. The tornado blew down concrete walls, ripped roofs apart, snapped power poles and knocked down signs. The month ended much like it began with warm and humid conditions. The last few days of September across the state brought temperatures peaking in the 90s and dewpoint levels into the 50s and 60s.
