Texas Climate Report: August 2013

The adjectives to describe the month of August 2013 were hot and dry. Temperatures throughout the state were allowed to push into the upper 90s and low 100s for much of the month as a stable ridge of high pressure dominated the weather patterns across the state. This ridge developed in late July and did not deteriorate in strength until mid month when a weak front sparked showers and thunderstorms, some of which were severe, across the eastern half of the state. The ridge then redeveloped back over the state for the latter part of the month ending it as it began, with heat advisories and record temperatures.

As is typical with high pressure systems, rainfall was at a minimum for much of the state, yet the areas that needed the most rain did receive it throughout the month. The Panhandle, Big Country, and Coastal Bend, areas under the most devastating of the state's drought for the longest time, received higher than normal precipitation improving drought conditions dramatically. Extreme drought was removed from much of rural Texas in the Panhandle and the into the Permian Basin, while the region between Corpus Christi and Galveston received enough rain to downgrade much of the area from extreme to moderate drought. The rest of the state either remained steady, or deteriorated in drought severity. The Brazos Valley moved back into extreme drought conditions and the Piney Woods were added to severe drought status as rainfall came in at less than half of the normal amount.
