Texas Climate Report: June 2013

The month of June started out warm and only got warmer as the month progressed. Nearly the entire state saw above average June temperatures from beginning to end and the month as a whole ranged from slightly above normal along the Gulf Coast to nearly 4 degrees Fahrenheit above normal in the Panhandle. Much of the above average ratings came during a heat wave towards the end of the month when a ridge of high pressure sat over the Southwestern United States from the 25th to the 30th. This system set heat records all across the state with well over 100 degree temperatures from El Paso to Tyler and everywhere in between. The high heat this month was also due to a lack of rainfall.

Throughout the month only pockets of the state saw within normal range of precipitation, that being around the Lerado and near Lubbock. Rainfall for much of the state only occurred due to traditional pop-up thunderstorms during the heat of the day, some of which became severe dropping several inches of rain. These severe storms are why the panhandle did so well compared to the rest of the state. The storms that did develop were slow moving and quickly dropped upwards of an inch of rain, such as a severe thunderstorm that passed over Lubbock on the 17th producing 1.71" of rainfall. The only other major precipitation event for the month of June was along the Rio Grande where over 10" of rain fell near Eagle Pass when strong upper level lifting and ample gulf moisture placed a rain bulls eye over this area.

Though rainfall was limited for the majority of the state, the areas that needed the most rain did receive it lessening the most intense drought conditions in the panhandle and along the southern Rio Grande. Most areas of Texas did see the drought tighten its grip, for drought conditions moved back to reclaim territory in East Texas and increased in intensity throughout much of Central Texas. Overall, 68% of the state is listed under severe drought or worse, with 12% of the state still under exceptional drought conditions.
