Texas Climate Report: February 2018

During the month of February, the southern Trans Pecos region, the Lower Valley, and Southeast Texas all saw temperatures more than four degrees above normal. The remainder of West and South Texas observed temperatures between two and four degrees above normal. Once again, the upper Panhandle received less than five percent of normal precipitation. The majority of the rest of Texas, however, saw improvements in terms of rain. Parts of Northeast Texas received between 300 and 400 percent of normal precipitation, and most of East Texas saw between 200 and 300 percent of normal rainfall. A large part of the Trans Pecos region still observed less than 25 percent of normal rainfall, but far West Texas saw as much 200 percent of normal rainfall. Most of South Texas observed less than 75 percent of normal precipitation.

Rain showers moving through the northeast and southeast corners of Texas helped abide the spread of moderate drought and abnormally dry regions towards the beginning of February. Wide swaths of light rain moved across North and Central Texas in the third week of February, but almost the entire Plains region still remained in severe and extreme drought.

By the end of February, 86 percent of the agricultural areas producing corn in Texas experienced drought (41 percent in extreme drought), 31 percent of hay in Texas was located in drought (five percent in extreme drought), 58 percent of cattle in Texas was located in drought (24 percent in extreme drought), and 83 percent of winter wheat was located in drought (41 percent in extreme drought).
