Texas Climate Report: August 1997
In the month of August, different parts of Texas observed varied types of weather as we progressed through the summer season. Mean monthly temperatures were below normal for North Texas and the Panhandle (approaching 2°F below normal in Dallas/Fort Worth), while they were above normal for the southern half of the state and West Texas (nearly 3°F above normal at Del Rio). Monthly precipitation was below normal for the Southern, South Central, Coastal, Plains, and Edwards Plateau regions, with Del Rio observing the largest departure from normal (84% below normal). East, North Central and West Texas regions observed above normal precipitation for August. The Gulf Coast was not threatened by any tropical storms or hurricanes during the month as 1997 was the first year since 1961 that there were no hurricanes or tropical storms in the Atlantic basin during August.
Except for the extreme Lower Valley, the Lone Star State was overcome by cooler than normal temperatures during the first week (6°F below normal in Abilene, Amarillo and Dallas/Ft. Worth). Isolated thunderstorms popped up during the start of the month before giving way to more widespread precipitation associated with a stationary front which extended across the state on the 7th. Austin (0.85"), Texarkana (0.94"), Abilene (1.10"), San Angelo (1.86") and Dallas/Ft. Worth (2.22") all received nearly an inch or more of rain at the end of the week.
As opposed to the first week, Texas was dominated by above normal temperature departures throughout the second and third weeks, highlighted by +5°F and +6°F departures in Del Rio for each of the respective weeks. None of the first-order stations received more than an inch of rain during the second week and two of these stations (Houston, 1.61" and Midland, 2.09") did so the following week.
August ended on an extremely dry note. The Gulf Coast of Texas was the only location across the state which received more than a trace of precipitation during the final week. Temperature anomalies, although small, were apparent in two distinct regions of the state. A north-south oriented line extending from Wichita Falls to the Lower Valley divided Texas with above normal temperature departures to the west, and below normal departures to the east. Despite the dry summer conditions, the majority of the state has still received above normal precipitation since the first of January.
