Texas Climate Report: February 1997
Temperatures were mild the 1st through the 3rd as 70s and 80s dominated over Texas. By the 3rd, a low pressure system was situated over the Panhandle which induced Gulf of Mexico moisture northward into parts of East Texas. Precipitation was limited to extreme eastern and coastal regions of Texas. As this low pressure system moved to the east, cool and dry air replaced the warm, moist air. Afternoon temperatures on the 5th and 6th ranged from the 30s and 40s in North and West Texas to 60s along the Gulf Coast. On the 6th, snow fell in portions of the Panhandle and North Central Texas. Precipitation accumulations were 1.35" in Amarillo and 0.92" at Dallas/Fort Worth. Heavy rain was reported also in San Angelo (1.66").
As a low pressure system worked northward from the Gulf of Mexico, copious amounts of moisture were entrained as overrunning was the primary focus for additional precipitation. Most of the eastern half of Texas received precipitation with this event on the 7th. Some of the heaviest amounts were reported at Austin (0.65"), Lufkin (0.93"), Texarkana (0.67"), Tyler (1.07"), and Waco (0.52"). On the 8th, as the low pressure system continued to move to the east, high pressure brought cold air southward from Canada once again dropping temperatures state-wide. Dalhart reported the coldest temperature in Texas for February on the 8th with 15°F. Temperatures across Texas ranged from the mid 20s to the mid 50s through the 11th.
The clashing of a potent cold front and Gulf moisture resulted in torrential rains and heavy snow on the 12th. In and around the Lubbock area, anywhere from 1 to 6 inches of snow was reported, officially, with some reports upwards of 10 inches! Much of Texas was under a flash flood watch throughout the day as many locations were inundated by heavy rain. Beaumont/Port Arthur (2.57"), Houston (3.08"), Lufkin (2.86"), Tyler (2.04"), and Waco (3.28") each reported over two inches of rain on the 12th! One report was of 5.90" of rain falling before dark in Pearland (Brazoria Co.), just south of Houston. A tornado was sighted in Galveston by mid-afternoon, but no injuries or damage was reported in association with this event. Lighter amounts of precipitation fell through the 16th as the worst of the storms appeared to be over.
Skies cleared and temperatures rebounded into the upper 60s and lower 70s by the 17th and 18th as a high pressure system built into the central portion of the country. More rains blanketed Texas the 19th through the 21st while most of the land was already saturated. Flood watches and warnings were in place once again as several inches of rain were reported in San Angelo and Lufkin. Wind gusts above 40 mph accompanied this system causing wide-spread damage in the Houston area. Corpus Christi reported the high temperature for the month on the 21st with 92°F. Another bout of heavy rains fell at the end of the month re-emphasizing what a difference a year can make!
