Texas Climate Report: April 2001
Texas experienced a relatively warm April this year, with only two stations reporting below normal average temperatures. Amarillo, with a mean temperature of 61°F, had the largest positive departure from normal at 4.2°F above the mean, while Abilene, with a mean of 64.1°F, had the largest negative departure at -1.3°F. Not one Texas station reported having 100% or more of average precipitation, and two stations, El Paso and Midland, recorded no precipitation at all. The station with the highest percent of average precipitation was San Antonio, which recorded 2.29" of precipitation, 92% of the normal. Only five first-order stations (Brownsville, Galveston, Houston, Port Arthur, and San Antonio) recorded over 50% of average precipitation.
April began relatively mild as a warm front moved in on the 1st, bringing highs in the 80s to the majority of the state with some stations in the West Texas and Big Bend area reporting temperatures in the 90s. Warm temperatures continued until the 6th, when a cold front swept through the state and brought little precipitation and slightly cooler temperatures. Temperatures in the 80s dominated the region until a stronger cold front moved through Texas on the 11th, lowering temperatures into the 70s and bringing much needed precipitation. Wichita Falls received 1.14" of precipitation and Lufkin received 1.30" of precipitation.
Temperatures quickly warmed up by the 15th but were cooled back down on the 16th-17th when another cold front brought more precipitation and dropped temperatures down into the 30s in the Panhandle. Houston received 1.51" of rain and recorded temperatures in the mid-60s. Another cold front, traveling through on the 23rd, brought more rainfall to the state, with San Antonio recording 2.14" of precipitation. The state quickly warmed up however, and highs in the 80s dominated the state once again until the end of the month.
