Texas Climate Report: February 2001
Texas experienced the end of the relatively cool weather during the past few months as every first-order station in the state recorded above average temperatures in February. Brownsville was the warmest station with a mean monthly temperature of 67.5°F (5.1°F above average). However, February 2001 does not compare to February 2000, when every station in the state was at least 4°F above average (Dallas/Fort Worth was 9.4°F warmer than average). February precipitation, unlike the temperatures, was less uniformly distributed throughout the state. Of the 20 first-order stations, only 8 received above average precipitation during the month. Dallas/Fort Worth recorded 6.17" of precipitation (283% of their average), while Galveston only recorded 0.37" (16% of their average).
February had a mild start as the majority of the state experienced high temperatures in the 50s and 60s. By the 7th, temperatures in the Lower Valley crept into the 80s, while the rest of the state enjoyed highs in the 70s. However, a pacific cold front moved through the state on the 8th and 9th, quickly changing the weather. High temperatures dropped back into the 40s and 50s by the 11th, and a large portion of Texas received some precipitation. Temperatures again reached into the 60s and 70s by the middle of the month. A low pressure system, which moved just noreth of Texas on the 13th and 14th, produced more rain in northern portions of the state.
Warm weather persisted into the last week of February as a few cold fronts skirted the northern border of the state, but never pushed through. However, on the 24th, another pacific cold front managed enough momentum to swing through Texas. While it didn't significantly decrease temperatures, it did produce some precipitation in several areas in the state. On the 27th and 28th, an arctic cold front pushed into Texas, dramatically dropping temperatures and triggering showers and thunderstorms as it moved through.
