Texas Climate Report: July 2001
Hot and dry are the best words to sum up the month of July for most areas in Texas. Of the twenty primary stations, only Dallas/Fort Worth and Galveston reported above average precipitation, while every station reported above to slightly above average temperatures. Both Lubbock and Amarillo reported +5.3°F departure from normal, with Lubbock setting a record high on the 16th of 105°F; Lubbock also mentioned that this was the second warmest month on record. Precipitation was sparse with eleven stations reporting less than 50% of the normal. Galveston managed to acquire 5.24" of rain, while Corpus Christi set a daily record of precipitation on the 2nd with 1.30". As precipitation remains light for most of the state, drought concerns remain high. According to the Palmer drought severity index, the Trans Pecos and Lower Valley regions are rated Severe Drought, and the rest of the state except the East, South Central, and Upper Coast are rated Moderate Drought.
The beginning of the month had temperatures near or slightly below normal for most of the state. This is also the timeframe when most stations acquired the majority or all their monthly precipitation. Gulf moisture and the proper unstable conditions contributed to some afternoon thundershowers, and the cloud cover aided to moderate temperatures. These thundershowers were hit or miss, with Beaumont/Port Arthur receiving 1.56" on the 2nd, Houston and Brownsville getting 1.13" and 1.58", respectively, on the 3rd.
Following this brief stint of slightly cooler than normal temperatures, and some precipitation, a high-amplitude ridge dominated the weather pattern for the majority of the month. A high pressure ridge like this contributes to very warm temperatures and stable conditions, not allowing thunderstorms to form. Often a ridge such as this will have equal warmth or slightly warmer temperatures above the surface. Typically the atmosphere cools with height, but when it remains the same or increases in temperature with height, this is referred to as being "capped." This is a very stable situation, and it does not allow for thunderstorms to form, nor does the ridge move much at all, often referred to as a blocking pattern.
Toward the latter part of the month, the ridge moved slightly to the west helping to bring more unstable conditions to the eastern part of the state. This helped to bring some precipitation, but not enough to make up for the deficit that most stations encountered. College Station reported 1.46" on the 27th, and Galveston acquired a total of 3.70" on the 27th and 28th.
