Texas Climate Report: June 2001
The major weather event for Texas in the month of June was Tropical Storm Allison. Allison made landfall on the 5th dropping vast amounts of rainfall to the Upper Coast and East regions of the State. Houston suffered the worst of the storm receiving 16.49" of rain during the six days that Allison hovered over Texas. Major flooding and damage to homes in and around the Houston area will be felt for a long time to come. Most other locations around the state acquired under normal amounts of precipitation. Nine stations in the western regions of the state received less than 50% of mean rainfall. The state was bisected with the western half having above normal temperatures, while the east saw near to slightly below normal temperatures.
Allison dominated the weather news in the first part of the month. Not only did Houston see excessive amounts of rainfall, Beaumont/Port Arthur and Galveston saw 10.03" and 9.88" respectively. Some locations, such as College Station, which received 3.57", got some beneficial rain, and not torrential flooding. Temperatures remained close to normal for much of the first part of the month, except where the cloud cover of Allison kept some moderate temperatures in the eastern part of the state.
Following the departure of Allison, the middle of the month saw temperatures primarily in the 90s, but a cold front passed through the state on the 14th through the 16th. The passing of the front brought temperatures into the mid and upper 80s, and on the 15th, some heavy precipitation fell in areas like McAllen, which received 3.16", and seven other stations acquired over one inch of rain that same day. Following the frontal passage, temperatures rebounded into the 90s. Lubbock did manage to break a record on the 12th with 105°F.
The latter part of the month saw a weak cold front pass through on the 21st. Although the front did not bring high temperatures down much, it contributed to a record low in Waco on the 23rd of 62°F. Some scattered light showers delivered some beneficial rain to some areas, but most locations in the west remained dry, but Austin received 2.09" on the 22nd. Temperatures remained in the 90s for the rest of the month, with some 100s peppered across the state. Some afternoon showers delivered light rain to some stations at the close of the month.
