Texas Climate Report: March 2001
For After a warmer than average February, the month of March was dramatically cooler than average for every station in Texas, except for El Paso. In fact, nine stations recorded cooler mean temperatures in March than in February (Austin, Brownsville, College Station, Corpus Christi, Galveston, Houston, Port Arthur, San Antonio, Victoria). Austin's mean monthly temperature of 52.9°F was 8.6°F below average. Also unlike February, all but two stations (Brownsville, Wichita Falls) received above normal precipitation. Port Arthur recorded 7.29", and the 3.96" recorded in Amarillo was 413% of the average monthly precipitation.
March began relatively cold and wet as the remnants of a cold front moved out of the state. However, high temperatures quickly rebounded into the 60s and 70s within the next few days. Warm and dry weather persisted until a low pressure system from southern California moved through the state on the 8th, decreasing temperatures and triggering precipitation for much of Texas. On the 11th and 12th, a weak cold front moved through the northern portions of the state. While temperatures were not dramatically affected, this front did trigger more precipitation in the eastern portions of Texas. On the 13th, skies once again cleared and high temperatures climbed into the 70s and 80s.
