Texas Climate Report: November 2005
November this year proved to be warm and dry. All but three main reporting stations (Brownsville, Corpus Christi, and Galveston) in Texas reported below average rainfall for the month. Eight stations reported rainfall totals less than 0.02" with six of those stations reporting no measurable precipitation (0.00" or Trace). The stations along the coast proved to be the only stations in the state with a decent amount of rainfall with Corpus Christi at 5.02", Brownsville at 1.84", Galveston at 3.86", and Houston at 2.72". The High and Low Rolling Plains along with the Edwards plateau and Trans Pecos regions of the state received almost no rainfall with only Amarillo (0.19") and Midland (0.01") receiving measurable precipitation. This lack of rainfall has enhanced the drought conditions that continue to persist over the state. The United States Drought Monitor has all but the Trans Pecos region of the state in a drought. The central portion of the state, including Dallas/ Fort Worth, Waco, Austin, and San Antonio, is listed as in a severe drought with the remainder of the state except the Trans Pecos region listed as abnormally dry.
This November also experienced above average temperatures. The month started out warm with temperatures 10°F-15°F above normal for the 2nd through the 15th. A cold front moved through the state lowering temperature dramatically. The high in College Station went from 83°F on the 15th to 58°F on the 16th and in Austin the high was 78°F on the 15th compared to 58°F on the 16th. The below-average temperatures continued until around the 20th when the temperatures began to rise to above-average levels again. The above average temperatures continued, and a number of record highs were set including 84°F in College Station on the 23rd. Another cold front moved through the state on the 27th-28th and lowered the temperatures. However, due to the lack of moisture in the atmosphere, both of the fronts that moved through the state during the month produced little or no precipitation except in areas near the Gulf of Mexico where the moisture was available.
This November ranked as the 9th warmest November nationally. The nationally-average temperature was 45.5°F, which was 3°F above the average. The month of December looks to show no relief from the high temperature as the Climate Prediction Center has forecasted above-average temperature for December through February.
