Texas Climate Report: February 2006
This February started off very warm for most of the state. Corpus Christi saw record highs of 93°F, 95°F, and 82°F on the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th respectively. The high of 95°F on topped the old record by 8° (87°F). Temperature were slightly cooled off when a weak front moved through the state on the 5th and 6th. Temperature then began increase again throughout the 13th-16th. On the 16th Abilene, San Angelo, Waco, Austin, Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Midland broke or tied a record high temperature. This warm air was brought up by winds from the south as a strong cold front approached. The cold front passed through the state on the 17th and 18th and brought with it some of the coldest air all winter. A record low temperature of 19°F was set in Abilene on the 19th, only three days after a record high. Temperatures dropped to between 17°F and 23°F below normal. Amarillo reported a low of 4°F on the 18th. Temperatures remained about average until the last two days of the month, which saw a return of the warm temperatures the state has been experiencing all winter. Overall, the month showed some relief from the warm temperatures in the central portions of the state, with College Station, Austin, and Midland below average. However, the southern portions of the state including Corpus Christi and Brownsville continued to be warm. Interestingly, Victoria was 0.7°F below normal while Corpus Christi was 2.0°F above normal and the stations are only about 100 miles apart. The same can be said for Amarillo and Lubbock. Amarillo has a temperature 1.3°F below normal while Lubbock had a temperature 2.0°F above normal.
In terms of precipitation, February proved to be helped to a few areas but the month provided little relief for most. Midland, Abilene, D/FW, and College Station all recorded above average precipitation. College Station reported a daily rainfall total record will 2.11" on the 1st. On the 24th and 25th, a band of persistent rainfall moved from southwest to northeast on a line from Midland to Abilene to Dallas/Fort Worth. This band gradually moved east, and weakened. The area of above normal precipitation is the same area in which this band traveled. This band provided the rainfall that left some stations above average for the month. At many stations, this was the only moderate-to-heavy precipitation reported during the entire month. However, most of the state was left dry. Areas to the north and south of this band received very little rainfall for the month. Amarillo, Del Rio, and Corpus Christi reported less than 10% of their normal precipitation. 12 stations reported only 50% of their normal total precipitation.
While most of the state saw relief from warm temperatures, the lack of rainfall provided little relief from the drought conditions that have persisted over the state for numerous months.
