Texas Climate Report: February 2008
La Nina conditions prevailed this month across the entire Lone Star State. This was most apparent in the average monthly temperatures. Every first order station recorded above average mean temperatures for the month. San Antonio’s mean temperature of 61.7°F was a whopping 7°F above normal. Brownsville’s mean temperature of 68.8°F was over 6°F above normal. Corpus Christi, Dallas/Fort Worth, Del Rio, Houston, Lubbock, San Angelo, and Victoria also recorded mean monthly temperatures of at least 4°F above normal. No significant intrusions of arctic air entered the state during the month.
Dry conditions prevailed throughout the state. Only 5 of the first-order stations: Amarillo, College Station, Houston, Lubbock, and Shreveport, recorded above average precipitation totals. Parts of west and Deep South Texas were especially dry. Brownsville and Corpus Christi only received 0.04" and 0.16" of precipitation, respectively, for the entire month. The Climate Prediction Center predicts that current La Nina conditions will prevail into March. What this means is that Texas can expect more of the same: above average temperatures and below average precipitation.

Bold-italics indicate a value broke or tied the record from a previous year. *Dep.: Departure of the monthly average temperature from the 1971-2000 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Perc. Norm.: Monthly precipitation total divided by 1971-2000 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Deg. Days: Computed daily as the departure of the daily average temperature from 65°F and aggregated over the entire month. *Heating degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a -1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. *Cooling degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a +1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. |
