Texas Climate Report: June 2008
June 2008 was quite dry for major portions of Texas, including West, South, and East Texas. Five first order stations (El Paso, San Antonio, Victoria, Waco, and College Station) received less than 10% of their normal precipitation for June. San Antonio received one of its driest Junes on record, recording only 0.01" of rain for the month. El Paso recorded the same, although little rainfall is more common there. Victoria, however, recorded just above a tenth of an inch for the month, which is a far cry from the record setting rainfall during the summer of 2007.
Only 3 stations reported slightly above average precipitation totals, with these stations roughly in the Midwest to North sections of Texas. Of the first order stations, those that received almost normal precipitation are primarily in this area. Wichita Falls and Lubbock both received over 90% of their average precipitation, and Abilene and San Angelo followed closely, receiving over 80% of their normal. An unusually strong cold front made its way through Texas in very late June, which led to some desperately needed rainfall for much of the state.
Temperatures, also, were extraordinarily warm for the month. Every first order station reported an above average month with respect to temperature from as low as 1.2°F above normal in Corpus Christi to over 6°F above average in Wichita Falls. East, North, and South Texas were mildly above average, ranging from 1°F-3°F above average. However, the West, Midwest, and Northeast, around Dallas/Fort Worth, were scorched with temperatures that were 4°F-6°F above normal. Only 7 stations did not exceed 100°F at least once during the month. Still, of those seven, four reached at least 97°F.
