Texas Climate Report: May 2008
The month of May was relatively dry for most of the western and southern portions of Texas, as well as for most of central Texas. Notably dry cities include Galveston, Victoria, and El Paso, which received 1%, 6%, and 8% of the normal precipitation for the month, respectively. Eastern Texas and the Panhandle enjoyed more rainfall, though most cities did not reach their normal average precipitation for the month. Temperatures across the state ran above average, generally from 1°F-4°F above average. Central Texas was most affected by this rise in temperature, while the temperatures along the coast, though slightly warmer than normal, were moderated by the sea.
Temperatures steadied to above average levels during the second half of the month. Of course, several cases of severe weather were observed this month; with respect to severe weather, this year has been certainly above average in activity.

Bold-italics indicate a value broke or tied the record from a previous year. *Dep.: Departure of the monthly average temperature from the 1971-2000 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Perc. Norm.: Monthly precipitation total divided by 1971-2000 monthly normal, which is provided by the National Climatic Data Center. *Deg. Days: Computed daily as the departure of the daily average temperature from 65°F and aggregated over the entire month. *Heating degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a -1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. *Cooling degree day (HDD): Each unit corresponds to a +1°F departure of a daily average temperature from 65°F. |
