Texas Climate Report: August 2010
Dry and HOT is an easy way to describe the weather in Texas during the month of August. August 2010 continued the trend of above normal temperatures across most of the state. Average daytime temperatures topped 100°F during the month in College Station, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Angelo, Austin, Waco and Wichita Falls. Not a single station saw average daily high temperatures below 90°F, while daily average minimum temperatures were all at least 69°F. One record was set during the month of August, in Amarillo, as the minimum temperature on the 26th dropped to 48°F. Both College Station and Houston saw some of their warmest daily minimums ever recorded. College Station never dropped below 72°F and in Houston the daily low temperature never dipped below 74°F. Only Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Houston, Lubbock, Port Arthur, Wichita Falls and San Angelo received more than an inch of rain and not a single station had above normal amounts of precipitation. The 3.34" of precipitation was the largest amount at a first-order station during August, and this occurred in Port Arthur. Although Port Arthur received the most precipitation, this was only 69% of their normal precipitation for the month. Plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures, which averaged 100.6°F, helped keep Austin from receiving any precipitation during the whole month.
